Skip on a Limassol Street: How the Permit Actually Works

When you need a permit, and when you do not

The rule is about who owns the ground under the skip, not about the size of the job. On your own land you never need one. In practice in Limassol the question comes up on central streets and the main avenues: Old Town apartments, seafront restaurants on Molos, terraced houses in Kapsalos and Neapolis, where there is no forecourt and the road is the only spot. • No permit: your driveway, your garden, a private car park, a building plot inside its fence, a hotel or restaurant service yard. Put the pin there and the skip is delivered.
• Permit needed: a public road, a pavement, a marked parking bay, a pedestrian street. The skip occupies municipal ground, and the municipality wants to know for how long and where exactly.
• Grey area: the strip in front of your house that looks like yours but is public. If cars can park on it, assume it is public.

Which municipality covers your address

Since 1 July 2024 the Limassol area has four municipalities. The old municipalities of Germasogeia, Agios Athanasios and Mesa Geitonia no longer exist on their own; they are parts of the new ones, and the application goes to the new municipality. In the 2024 law the eastern one was drafted as «Ανατολικής Λεμεσού», but its name is Δήμος Αμαθούντας.

• Δήμος Λεμεσού: the city centre, the Old Town, Molos, Neapolis, Kapsalos, Agia Fyla, Mesa Geitonia and Tserkezoi.
• Δήμος Αμαθούντας (seat in Agios Athanasios): Germasogeia with the tourist area, Agios Athanasios, Agios Tychonas, Mouttagiaka, Akrounta, Mathikoloni, Foinikaria and Armenochori.
• Δήμος Πολεμιδιών: Kato Polemidia and Pano Polemidia.
• Δήμος Κουρίου (seat in Ypsonas): Ypsonas, Kolossi, Erimi, Trachoni, Episkopi, Kantou, Sotira, Asomatos and Akrotiri.
• Villages outside these four, such as Parekklisia, Pyrgos, Moni, Alassa or Pachna, are communities: ask the community council. Main roads between towns belong to the Public Works Department, and the council will tell you if your spot is on one.

What they ask for

Every municipality runs its own form, but the questions are the same. Have these ready before you go in or fill the online request:

• The exact address and a photo or sketch of the spot where the skip will stand
• The dates: delivery day and the day you expect collection. Ask for a day or two of slack; extending later is harder than asking upfront
• The skip size. In Limassol that is 6, 9 or 12 m³; the 12 m³ needs about the length of two parked cars
• Your name and contact details as the person responsible for the placement
• The municipal fee, which is set by each municipality and paid to them directly

Allow a few working days. In our experience the Δήμος Λεμεσού desk is the busiest, so an Old Town job booked for Monday should have its application in the week before. We do not file the application for you, but once you have the permit in hand we deliver on the next open slot, often the same day for early orders.

Streets where you should plan for a driveway instead

Some spots are technically public road but are rarely approved, or are approved only for a few hours at night. Plan an alternative before you apply:

• Makariou III and Anexartisias: bus lanes and loading bays; placement is usually refused or restricted to specific hours
• The Old Town pedestrian streets around Agiou Andreou and Ankara Street: too narrow for a standard skip truck; when the municipality does approve, the delivery goes early in the morning with a smaller truck
• Molos promenade and the seafront strip: pedestrian priority; restaurants there usually get the skip into a service alley or a rented parking space instead
• Germasogeia tourist road in season: possible, but expect a short window and a request to keep the spot coned

If your only option is one of these, ask a neighbour with a forecourt, or rent a private parking space for two days. Both are cheaper than a refused application and a rebooked delivery.

What happens without one

Municipal inspectors do walk the centre, and a skip on a pavement without paperwork is easy to spot. The usual outcome is a fine to the person who ordered it and an instruction to remove the skip within hours, which means an unplanned collection and a second delivery once the permit exists.

The driver puts the skip where you pointed on the map and does not ask for paperwork: the permit is between you and the municipality, and so is any fine. So if the spot is a pavement or a busy street, get the permit before the delivery day.

Questions and answers

Does Skipaki arrange the permit?

No. The application has to come from the person responsible for the placement, and the municipality deals with you directly. The driver delivers to the spot you pick on the map; whether that spot needs a permit is between you and the municipality.

How long does a Limassol permit take?

A few working days is typical, longer in the city centre and in summer. Apply about a week before you want the skip.

Can the skip go on the pavement in front of my shop for one day?

One day still counts as occupying public ground. Some municipalities issue short permits for a single day; ask for that explicitly, it is often quicker.

What if the municipality refuses?

Ask a neighbour with a driveway, rent a private parking space, or split the job into two smaller loads that fit on your own ground. A 6 m³ skip fits almost any forecourt.
