Where the Waste From a Limassol Skip Actually Goes

The route from your driveway to the facility

A skip is not a dumpster that vanishes. When the truck collects it from Germasogeia or Ypsonas, the load has a destination written down before it leaves, and the operator keeps the disposal slip. That slip is the difference between a licensed skip service and a man with a truck.

Every operator on Skipaki in Limassol is licensed for waste transport, and every load goes to a facility licensed to receive that type of waste. Where exactly depends on what you put in.

Construction and demolition waste

Tiles, plaster, bricks, concrete, old bathroom suites and kitchen worktops are the most common Limassol load. They go to licensed construction-and-demolition recycling yards in the industrial belt west of the city, where the load is tipped, sorted and crushed.

The crushed material comes back out as aggregate for road bases and backfill. Steel from reinforcement and old radiators is pulled out with magnets and sold on. Very little of a clean rubble skip ends up in the ground.

• Plasterboard is accepted but should be dry; soaked plasterboard is a problem at the yard
• Soil and excavated earth are fine in small amounts; a full skip of soil is a different, heavier job and worth mentioning when you book

Mixed household and clearance waste

Apartment clearances, tenant leftovers, boxes of everything: this is the load that goes to the Limassol district integrated waste facility at Pentakomo, east of the city. The facility sorts what it can, recovers recyclables and refuse-derived fuel, and only the residue is landfilled.

This is also the most expensive route per tonne for the operator, which is why sorting furniture and garden waste out of a clearance skip is worth the effort even when the price to you is the same.

Garden waste, palm fronds and pruning

Green waste from Limassol gardens goes to shredding and composting rather than to the mixed line. Branches, hedge cuttings, lawn and leaves are the easy part. Palm fronds are the hard part: they are fibrous, they do not compost quickly and some facilities treat them separately, so say so in the booking notes if a palm is coming down. Tree trunks above about 30 cm across are not garden waste; they are timber and need a different route. Cut them to under a metre and they can travel in the skip, but tell us.

Furniture, mattresses and appliances

Sofas, wardrobes and tables go through the bulky-waste line: wood is chipped, foam and fabric go to the mixed stream, metal frames are recovered. Mattresses are the item that cannot be tipped with anything else, which is why they carry a €15 charge each in Limassol; they are counted, set aside and processed separately.

Fridges, freezers and air conditioners contain refrigerant gas and are handled under a separate electrical-waste scheme. They can sit in the skip if you tell us, but they are collected and routed on their own, not tipped with the rest.

What cannot go into the skip at all

If any of these turns up in a load at the facility, the whole skip can be rejected and sent back at the customer's cost. The full accepted list is in what can and cannot go into a skip in Cyprus.

• Asbestos in any form, including old corrugated roof sheets and pipe lagging: a specialist contractor with its own licence, never a skip
• Tyres
• Paint, solvents, oil, fuel and chemicals, including half-empty tins
• Batteries of any size, from car batteries to power-tool packs
• Gas bottles, even empty ones
• Medical and clinical waste

The free alternative for small loads

If you have a car boot of garden cuttings or one old armchair, you do not need a skip. Limassol district runs several green points where residents can drop bulky items, garden waste, small amounts of rubble and old appliances, usually free with proof of address. The municipality lists the nearest one and its opening hours.

The skip is for the job that does not fit in a car: the full bathroom, the whole apartment, the garden that has not been touched in three years. For that, book online, and the load ends up where it should.
